Eminent leaders who participated in the inaugural session included Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Shankarrao Dev, Jagjivan Ram, BG Kher, OP Mehtab, Aruna Asaf Ali, Ram Manohar Lohia, Ashok Mehta, Ramchandra Sakharam Ruikar, Maniben Patel and other prominent trade union leaders.

Under the guidance of Mahatma Gandhi, the Founding Fathers in their wisdom preferred to give INTUC an independent identity with its own constitution, while at the same time functioning as an offshoot of the Congress.

  • To make necessary arrangements for efficient conduct, satisfactory and speedy completion of authorized strikes or Satyagraha.
  • To promote the spirit of solidarity, service, fraternal co-operation and mutual help among the workers.
  • To develop among the workers a sense of responsibility towards the industry and the community.
  • To raise the staff standard of efficiency and discipline.

Since its inception, INTUC has maintained a very close association with AICC.
