Biography of Maharani Gayatri Devi

Gayatri Devi was born on 23 May 1919 in London, England. Her father's name was Rajkumar Jitendra Narayan, he was the younger brother of the Crown Prince of Cooch Behar in Bengal. Gayatri's father later became the king. Gayatri Devi's mother's name was Princess Indira Raje who was the daughter of Maharaja Sayajirao of the princely state of Baroda. After the death of King Jitendra Narayan, Indira Raje took up the responsibility for Gayatri and the other four children.

Gayatri Devi's Teachings

Gayatri Devi was educated at Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore's Shantiniketan before going abroad for education. Gayatri Devi was very attractive and beautiful since childhood. Indira Gandhi also studied with Gayatri Devi. In such a situation, apparently, both knew each other very well and from here the rivalry between the two started. Outspoken journalist Khushwant Singh wrote that Indira Gandhi was envious of Gayatri Devi's influence and beauty in school. Thereafter this jealousy turned into an enmity (political).

Marital life of gayatri devi

When Gayatri Devi was only 12 years old, she fell in love with Raja Mansingh Bahadur of Jaipur. While Mansingh was already married he had done two marriages. But Gayatri had no objection to becoming his third wife. Mansingh was nine years older than him. When Gayatri turned 16, Mansingh proposed marriage to Mansingh, which Gayatri Devi happily accepted.

Gayatri Devi Political Journey

Gayatri Devi was offered by former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri to join the Congress party, but she turned it down. In 1962, Gayatri Devi independently contested the elections against Congress. Gayatri Devi got record-breaking votes in the election. She got 1,92,909 votes out of 2,46,516. The record for this huge victory was recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. Khushwant Singh has written that Gayatri Devi's presence in the Parliament made Indira Gandhi uncomfortable. Indira Gandhi even called her a 'glass doll'.
 

The enmity between Indira Gandhi and Gayatri Devi

During the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi, when all the opposition leaders were being arrested and imprisoned under the MISA Act, Gayatri Devi was undergoing treatment in a hospital in Mumbai, where she escaped from arrest. But Devi returned to Delhi after getting treatment, her residence was raided by income tax. Gayatri Devi was convicted and imprisoned under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act. She spent 6 months in prison where he developed a mouth ulcer and took 3 weeks to be allowed treatment.

Gayatri Devi has written in her book 'A Princess Remembers: Memoirs of the Jaipur' that she was subjected to abhorrent inhuman treatment while in jail, but she did not break it. In the prison, she used to teach the children of other prisoners. She was released on parole after spending 6 months in jail. In this way, the rivalry between Indira Gandhi and Gayatri Devi continued for life. Later Gayatri Devi retired from politics.
