The United States will celebrate its 247th Independence Day on July 4th, 2023. Independence Day is a federal holiday in the United States that commemorates the Declaration of Independence.

Background of USA Independence Day:

The path to American independence began during the American Revolution in 1775. On July 2nd, 1776, the Second Continental Congress voted in favor of a resolution declaring independence from Great Britain. Two days later, on July 4th, 1776, Congress approved the final draft of the Declaration of Independence, which outlined the fundamental principles and rights of the American people.

John Adams, a key leader during the American War of Independence and the second president of the United States, believed that July 2nd would be celebrated as the nation's Independence Day. In a letter to his wife, he wrote, "The second day of July 1776, will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore."

Although Congress approved the declaration on July 2nd, it was on July 4th that the document was officially adopted. Since then, July 4th has been recognized as the Independence Day of the United States. In 1870, Congress passed a bill to make Independence Day a federal holiday, and in 1941, the law was amended to make it a paid holiday for federal employees.
