Gandhi Jayanti 2022: The full name of Mahatma Gandhi (Father of the Nation) is Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. People also address him as Bapu. He is considered a political and spiritual leader and a source of inspiration for the Indian independence movement. He always encouraged me to follow the path of non-violence. He has a very remarkable role in liberating the country. Let us study the life and achievements of Mahatma Gandhi through this article.

Gandhi Jayanti 2022: This day is celebrated with prayer services and cultural programs in schools, colleges, and government institutions. October 2 is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti. It is one of the officially declared national holidays and this year marks the 152nd birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Mahatma Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat, hence Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated every year on 2 October.

On 30 January Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse by firing three bullets at the prayer place of Birla House. Therefore every year on 30 January, Martyr's Day or Sarvodaya Day is celebrated in the memory of Mahatma Gandhi.

Mahatma Gandhi worked tirelessly to end British rule and improve the lives of the poor through his Satyagraha. His ideology of truth and non-violence was also adopted by Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela in their struggle. Mahatma Gandhi also fought non-violently against injustice and racial discrimination in Africa for twenty consecutive years. He gained a lot of fame in India and abroad because of his simple lifestyle. He was known as Bapu.

Early life and family background


The full name of Mahatma Gandhi is (Mohan Das Karamchand Gandhi). Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat. He was the fourth child of Karamchand Gandhi and Putlibai. His father was the Diwan of a princely state. His mother Putlibai had a great influence on Gandhiji. Mahatma Gandhi was married off to Kasturba at the age of only thirteen. Harilal, Manilal, Ramdas and Devdas were the sons of Gandhiji.

London departure


Mahatma Gandhi completed his law studies in London, he went to London from India in 1888 to study law.

South Africa


In May 1893 he went to South Africa as a lawyer in connection with a case. There he first faced discrimination from black and white. When he was pushed out of the first class compartment of the train even after having a ticket as it was reserved for white people only. It was forbidden for any Indian and black to travel in first class. This incident had a profound effect on Gandhiji and he decided to fight against racial discrimination. He observed that such incidents are common with Indians in Africa. On 22 May 1894, Gandhi founded the Natal Indian Congress and worked hard for the rights of Indians in South Africa. In no time Gandhi became the leader of the Indian community in Africa.

Role in Indian Freedom Struggle


Gandhi returned to India in 1915 and joined the Indian National Congress along with his mentor, Shri Gopalkrishna Gokhale. Gandhi's first major achievements were the Champaran and Kheda movements in Bihar and Gujarat. He also led the Non-Cooperation Movement, the Civil Disobedience Movement, and the Quit India Movement.

Death


Mahatma Gandhi was shot dead by a devout Hindu Nathuram Godse on 30 January 1948. Godse was a fanatic Hindu so-called nationalist and an active member of Hindu Mahasabha. He accused Gandhi of taking the side of Pakistan and was opposed to Gandhi's non-violent principle.

• Hind Swaraj, published in Gujarati in 1909. 
 
• He edited several newspapers in Hindi, Gujarati, and English. Harijan in Hindi and Gujarati, Young India in English, and Gujarati magazine Navjeevan are prominent.
 
• The name of Gandhiji's autobiography is "The Experiments with the Truth" which he himself wrote.
 
• Among his other autobiographies, Satyagraha in South Africa, Hind Swaraj, etc. are prominent.

Awards and honors


• Time magazine named Man of the Year in 1930.
 
• In 2011, Time magazine selected Gandhi as one of the twenty-five political figures who have always been a source of inspiration to the world.
 
• Although he never received the Nobel Prize, he was nominated five times from 1937 to 1948.
 
• The Government of India annually presents the Gandhi Peace Prize to social workers, world leaders, and citizens. Nelson Mandela, the leader who fought against apartheid in South Africa, has been awarded this award.

Gandhi Ji movies


The 1982 film on Gandhi starring Ben Kingsley as Gandhi won the Best Picture award at the Oscars.

Gandhi recognized his principle of non-violence in the form of Satyagraha. Gandhiji's Satyagraha influenced many personalities. Nelson Mandel and Martin Luther King were influenced by Gandhiji in their struggle for freedom, equality and social justice. Satyagraha is based on true principles and non-violence.
