Paul Hince Biography

Paul Frank Hince (2 March 1945 - 22 July 2023) was a notable figure in English football, known both for his career as a winger and his later success as a sports journalist. He played a crucial role in Manchester City's Division One championship win in the 1967-1968 season.

Football Career

Born in Manchester in 1945, Paul Hince was a lifelong Manchester City fan. He began his football career at Old Trafford and later joined cross-town rivals Manchester City during the Mercer-Allison partnership in the 1967-1968 season. During this time, he made 11 appearances for the club and scored four goals.

Division One Title Win and Medal Recognition

Hince was an integral part of Manchester City's title-winning squad in the 1967-1968 season, under the management of Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison. However, at that time, only a limited number of medals were awarded by the Football League, and he was one of four players who did not receive a winner's medal. In October 2021, the Football League retrospectively awarded medals to Hince and the other three players in recognition of their contributions to the team's success.

Journalism Career

After retiring from professional football, Paul Hince transitioned to a successful career in sports journalism. He worked for the Manchester Evening News (MEN), where he served as the City correspondent. Later, he became the Chief Sportswriter and England correspondent for the same newspaper. Hince was widely recognized for his entertaining writing, wit, and wisdom, becoming one of the most well-read sports journalists in the region during his more than 30 years with the MEN.

Paul Hince passed away on 22 July 2023, at the age of 78. His contribution to both football and sports journalism left a lasting impact, and his loss was mourned by many, including the Manchester City community.
